Police in Bulawayo are investigating a fatal hit-and-run accident that happened on Saturday along the Bulawayo–Plumtree Road, near the 36 km peg.
In a statement, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) said an unknown driver in an unidentified vehicle hit two pedestrians walking along the road, killing them on the spot. Police said:
“The ZRP is investigating a fatal hit-and-run road traffic accident which occurred on 31/01/26 at the 36 km peg along Bulawayo–Plumtree Road.
“An unknown motorist, driving an unidentified vehicle, struck two pedestrians who were walking along the road. Both victims sustained severe injuries and died on the spot.
“Anyone with information should contact the nearest police station. No to Hit and Run Road Traffic Accidents.”
In Zimbabwe, hitting a pedestrian and driving off without stopping—a “hit-and-run”—is a serious crime under the Road Traffic Act [Chapter 13:11].
The law places strict duties on drivers involved in accidents, and breaking these rules can bring heavier penalties than the accident itself.
Section 70 of the Act says that if a driver causes injury or death, they must stop immediately, help the injured person, give their personal details to the victim, police, or bystanders, or report the accident at the nearest police station as soon as possible, and always within 24 hours.
Failing to stop after such an accident is a serious offence. Drivers can face imprisonment or fines, and their driving licence can be cancelled for a set period—usually two years or more.
