Warriors forward Tawanda Chirewa made his debut for English League One side Barnsley in their 3-1 win over Stevenage, following his loan move from Wolverhampton Wanderers last week.

David McGoldrick opened the scoring for Barnsley in the 14th minute, with Davis Keillor-Dunn adding a second in the 31st minute and completing his brace in the 48th.

Stevenage pulled one back through Dan Kemp in the 37th minute.

Chirewa, 22, came off the bench in the 80th minute, replacing Reyes Cleary, who had been playing as a left-sided forward just behind Keillor-Dunn in a 3-4-2-1 formation.

Speaking to the Barnsley website shortly after joining the club, Chirewa said he believes the move is the right step at this stage of his career. He said:

“I’m at a stage of my career right now where I have got a point to prove. I need to show what I can do and really impact games.

“The manager [Conor Hourihane], when I spoke to him, was on the same wavelength, and he sold me amazing ideas of how this club wants to go in these next couple of months.

“Watching them play, the bravery they show is something which I want to show, bravery to go and impact games and win some football games in this league.”

Barnsley are currently 15th in the League One table, with 36 points from 25 games in a 46-match season. The Tykes have won two of their last five matches, drawing two and losing one.
