Wicknell Chivayo has said he is holding back the US$250,000 bonus he had promised the Zimbabwe national football team, the Warriors, because of match-fixing allegations.
Chivayo had pledged the money in January to reward the Warriors for taking part in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), even though the team did not get past the group stage.
On Monday, 2 February, Chivayo said on social media that the bonus will not be paid for now, as FIFA is investigating alleged match-fixing in Zimbabwe’s final Group B game against South Africa. He wrote:
“Following the Warriors’ early AFCON EXIT, I had pledged to give them US$250,000 in CASH to uplift their morale.
“However, upon learning of a PETITION submitted to FIFA alleging match fixing in the final game against South Africa, I felt it prudent to temporarily withhold disbursement pending the results of the formal enquiry.”
Chivayo said he would ask ZIFA president Nqobile Magwizi to hold on to the US$250,000 bonus for now and only release it once FIFA or another relevant authority has given a final ruling on the match-fixing allegations.
He also gave Magwizi a brand new 2026 Range Rover Sport, D350 Autobiography Limited Edition.
Chivayo praised Magwizi’s work since becoming ZIFA president a year ago, saying the ZIFA Secretariat has been successfully reorganised, key governance systems reactivated, and all major operational units professionally realigned.
