Highlanders Football Club have confirmed the appointment of former Warriors captain and ex-Manchester City striker Benjani Mwaruwari as their new head coach, less than a month after naming South African national Thabo Senong to the same role.
The club announced Mwaruwari’s appointment on Saturday, 24 January, following a meeting between him and the club’s executive.
Reports suggest that financial difficulties may have influenced the decision to appoint Mwaruwari.
On 1 December 2025, Wicknell Chivayo had urged Highlanders to consider Mwaruwari for the position, offering to personally pay his salary and other benefits, including a car.
He also said that if the club chose another coach, he would not cover the coach’s salary or provide a vehicle.
Highlanders declined Chivayo’s offer and on 4 January 2026 appointed Senong as head coach instead.
It is unclear what role, if any, Senong will now play, as the club has not publicly commented on the matter.
In a statement issued on Saturday, 24 January 2026, Highlanders said further announcements on the full coaching set-up and any additional appointments will be made in due course. The statement reads:
“Highlanders Football Club wishes to inform its members and stakeholders of an update to the senior team’s technical setup.
“We are delighted to confirm the appointment of Benjani Mwaruwari as the senior team Head Coach.
“A respected figure and legend of the game who is highly qualified, Benjani brings a wealth of experience, leadership, and a deep understanding of the game as the Club embarks on an exciting new trajectory.
“Further announcements regarding the full coaching structure and additional appointments will be communicated in due course.
“We thank our loyal supporters and stakeholders for their unwavering support and look forward to the journey ahead as we build towards a strong and competitive 2026 season.”
