Senegal President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has declared Monday, 19 January 2026, a paid public holiday so citizens can celebrate the country’s latest Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) win.

The announcement came after wild celebrations across Senegal on Sunday night, following the Teranga Lions’ 1–0 victory over Morocco in a dramatic AFCON final in Rabat.

The win gave Senegal their second continental title, confirming their place as one of Africa’s football powerhouses.

Fireworks lit up the sky, car horns blared through crowded streets, and fans of all ages danced and sang, draped in Senegal’s green, yellow, and red colours.

The final had been tense and chaotic, but Senegal secured victory in extra time with a goal from Pape Gueye.

Sunday’s triumph follows their first AFCON win in 2021, when they beat Egypt on penalties.

Speaking on public television, President Faye praised the players for their resilience and patriotism. He said:

“The joy is indescribable… We saw men on the field — patriots fighting for our honour.

“This victory belongs to the lions, the coaching staff and the entire Senegalese people.”

He also pledged financial rewards for the national team in recognition of their achievement.
