A Masvingo vendor whose story went viral after a confrontation with police was arrested on Thursday and detained at Masvingo Central Police Station together with her three-year-old son.
The woman, Gladies Madhlame (41), a widow, was involved in an incident in which police officers allegedly roughed her up, leading to her apparently lifting her skirt during the public confrontation.
Madhlame is accused of exposing her underwear at a marketplace in the city centre. She spent the night in police custody and is expected to appear at the Masvingo Magistrates’ Court on Friday morning on a charge of indecent exposure.
Speaking to Masvingo Mirror on Thursday, Madhlame’s lawyer, Collen Maboke, said:
“My client is a widow. She travels from Chiredzi to sell vegetables and sleeps on pavements with her child until her stock runs out, so she can return to Chiredzi.
“Madhlame is spending the night in Police custody and will appear in court tomorrow.
“Police arrested and detained her for several hours without a charge on Tuesday and again on Wednesday.
“Today Police told Madhlame to come and collect her tomatoes, ocra and onions at Masvingo Central Police Station, and when she arrived, they informed her that she was under arrest and detained her.”
