The National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) has announced that the railway line between Chicualacuala and Maputo has been temporarily closed due to numerous washaways caused by heavy rains in Mozambique.

Mozambique’s state-owned rail and port company, Caminhos de Ferro de Moçambique (CFM), said repair work will begin once the waters have subsided.

In a statement on Friday, 16 January 2026, the NRZ confirmed that work on the affected railway line will only start after the floodwaters recede. The NRZ said:

“The NRZ would like to advise its customers and the public that the railway line between Chicualacuala and Maputo has been temporarily closed due to numerous washaways caused by heavy rains in Mozambique.

“This has affected the movement of traffic to and from Zimbabwe, routed through that corridor.

“CFM has indicated that repair work will start once the waters have subsided.

“NRZ apologises to its valued customers for the inconvenience caused by this disruption of service.”
