Warriors captain Marvelous Nakamba has apologised for a costly handball inside his own 18-yard area, which handed South Africa a penalty and contributed to Zimbabwe’s 3–2 defeat in their final Group B match on Monday night.
The penalty decision was confirmed following a review by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR).
Nakamba accepted full responsibility for the mistake and issued an apology after the game. He said:
“I just want to say sorry. I have to man up and accept the mistake that I made and say I am sorry to the country, to my teammates and to everyone in Zimbabwe.”
Motherwell FC’s Tawanda Maswanhise impressed in his first full AFCON appearance for the Warriors, scoring a stunning equaliser against South Africa in their final Group B match on Monday.
His 19th-minute strike, after weaving past three defenders and calmly finishing past Ronwen Williams, was voted CAF’s Move of the Day and marked his first-ever AFCON goal.
Maswanhise also played a key role in Zimbabwe’s second goal, which came via an own goal from Aubrey Modiba.
