The Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) says it is investigating Kwekwe City Council over allegations that funds collected from vendors were abused.

Kwekwe Mayor Albert Zinhanga told a full council meeting held last Tuesday that ZACC is already seized with the matter and has an audit report compiled by the council into the alleged theft of vendor funds. He said:

“The audit report is now under ZACC, and we cannot discuss it now. We are waiting for ZACC to finish what they are doing so that we also get feedback on the issue.”

Zinhanga was responding to a question from Ward 10 councillor Solomon Matsa, who had asked to be furnished with a copy of the audit report.

The audit was commissioned after Matsa raised allegations in August that thousands of dollars collected from vendors were being siphoned off by council management, prompting calls for a formal investigation.

Matsa said he had carried out his own inquiries, which indicated that the council collects between US$100,000 and US$150,000 from vendors each month, yet only about US$4,000 is reportedly making its way into the council’s coffers. Said Matsa:

“We need to see the audit report obtained on the issue of money being stolen in this council, we raised the issue about three months ago but up to now we haven’t seen the audit report.”
