Three traffic police officers from Murehwa appeared in court on Monday, facing charges of criminal abuse of duty after being caught with US$975 in bribe money allegedly collected from arrested motorists.

Prosper Muchangani (36), Shelton Masvande (34), and Mercy Makarimai were remanded in custody until Tuesday, when they are expected to apply for bail.

Prosecutors allege that on 21 December 2025, detectives from the CID’s Police Anti-Corruption Unit (PACU) were deployed to monitor traffic officers at roadblocks suspected of demanding and accepting bribes from motorists.

While patrolling along the Harare–Domboshava road, the detectives reached the 21-kilometre peg, where they observed the three officers conducting a traffic checkpoint at Nyambirai Farm. One detective remained nearby to monitor their activities.

According to the prosecution, Masvande was seen stopping two commuter omnibuses, registration numbers AHA 2282 and AFQ 3791. The drivers and conductors approached the officers and handed over cash to Makarimai, who held the Z69 book used for issuing fines. It is alleged that Makarimai then passed the money to Muchangani without issuing receipts to the motorists.

The detectives intervened and searched the officers. Muchangani was found in possession of US$975 in his trouser pockets. Records in the Z69 book showed no receipts had been issued that day.

Further investigation revealed that the deployment register contained no entry for the accused officers, and none had declared money in their possession before starting their duties.
