The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has dismissed claims that it received a donation of Highway Patrol vehicles from a man identified as Dr David Nhunzva.
The clarification follows the circulation of a video on social media, which appears to have been generated using artificial intelligence.
The footage purports to show “Nhunzva” handing over ZRP-branded vehicles to what appear to be senior police officers. The ZRP said:
“The ZRP dismisses the information and images circulating on some social media platforms to the effect that Dr David Nhunzva donated Highway Patrol Vehicles to the ZRP. The information is false and should be dismissed with the contempt it deserves.”
On Wednesday, Commissioner-General of Police Stephen Mutamba handed over three additional rebranded Ford Everest vehicles to the recently launched National Highway Patrol Unit, bringing the fleet to a total of nine vehicles.
The ZRP said more vehicles are expected to be deployed to the unit to enhance road safety, reduce accidents, and curb criminal activity during the festive season.
The government, however, has faced criticism for the limited support it provides to the police. Observers have questioned why only a small number of vehicles have been allocated to the ZRP.
At the same time, hundreds of cars have been distributed to entertainers, social media personalities, and groups linked to the ruling ZANU-PF party, leaving the police severely under-resourced.
