Two men accused of using worthless currency to dupe sellers of various merchandise in and around Harare have been arrested after months of conning unsuspecting entrepreneurs.
Detectives from the Zimbabwe Republic Police’s Criminal Investigations Department (CID) arrested Agrippa Chivhenge and Edious Rungano on Wednesday night after swooping on their rented home in Marlborough while they were asleep.
Since the arrests, dozens of alleged victims have been turning up at Braeside Police Station to identify the suspects, who are facing multiple fraud-related charges.
The pair first came to public attention in October, when they were accused of duping a farmer out of 250 chickens.
Police say the suspects used a bundle of obsolete Zimbabwe dollar notes hidden beneath a single United States dollar bill, which was presented as payment of US$1,500.
More than 100 victims have since come forward, many of them traders who sold goods through social media platforms. They claim they were swindled out of mobile phones, laptops, chickens and other electronic items.
Police said Chivhenge and Rungano had been on their wanted list for almost two years.
The two are expected to appear in court on Friday, 19 December.
