Members of Parliament in Zimbabwe have expressed concern over the use of black magic, after items resembling voodoo paraphernalia were reportedly found on the road leading to the Parliament building in Mt Hampden on Tuesday morning.

During proceedings in the National Assembly on Wednesday, MPs questioned whether their safety was at risk.

Chiredzi Central MP Ropafadzo Makumire (CCC) specifically raised concerns in light of the suspected ritual activity. Said Makumire:

“We would like to know whether, as representatives, our lives are safe because there are some things that we have noticed, such as some witchcraft artefacts that were at the entrance.

“There was a cloth, which belonged to the other party (ZANU PF), and a clay pot. So, we want to know whether we are safe in this place.”

In response, Deputy Speaker Tsitsi Gezi assured MPs that they are safe and have nothing to fear.

She explained that the incident was likely the act of a mentally unwell person rather than a deliberate threat. Said Gezi:

“From what you have seen, how can you say you are not safe? Because if we look at those things from social media, the way we have seen it, we can see that it has been done by a mentally challenged person. They do all those things everywhere.

“So, how is it going to get your lives into danger? Just because it has been placed there, what about everywhere else where it has been done? Who is not safe?”

Since images of the alleged witchcraft objects began circulating on social media, some have speculated that they could be linked to ZANU-PF factionalism, as one of the cloths was emblazoned with the party’s colours.
