ZANU PF Central Committee member Better Choto narrowly escaped death over the weekend after his brand-new, party-issued Ford Ranger rolled several times before coming to rest on the road in Wedza.
The accident happened around 1 PM near Chemhanza Primary School while Choto was driving alone along a strip road in Wedza District, Mashonaland East.
Witnesses said he swerved to avoid a head-on collision with an oncoming bus and lost control of the vehicle.
Choto had received the top-of-the-range Ford Ranger in October, part of a fleet handed over to ZANU PF Central Committee members by President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
He was rushed to Wedza Rural Hospital and later transferred to Mt. St Mary’s Hospital, where he remains under care.
In a phone interview with ZiFM Stereo News, Choto confirmed he is stable and satisfied with the treatment he is receiving.
Choto said the crash happened shortly after dropping off his family and while he was on his way to deliver farming inputs to his farm.
He represents Wedza on the ZANU PF Central Committee, is a former councillor for Marondera Rural District Council, and has previously served as a director in the Ministry of Youth.
Minister of Youth Empowerment, Development and Vocational Training, Tinoda Machakaire, and Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution in Mashonaland East, Itayi Ndudzo, visited Choto in the hospital, and close family sources confirmed they covered his medical expenses and ensured he received full care.
