A liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinder explosion sparked a fire that destroyed property valued at ZiG700,000 at a home in Morningside, Bulawayo, on Sunday.
Bulawayo Chief Fire Officer Mhlangano Moyo confirmed the incident, saying that while the Fire Brigade managed to save part of the property and some valuables, the fire was reported late, resulting in extensive damage. He said:
“We did attend the fire, but I’m not happy with what was saved, honestly, the fire was reported very late, when the damage had already been done.”
Moyo said the damage to the property was extensive. While his team managed to save around six high-value vehicles and other assets, a significant amount had already been destroyed by the time they arrived.
He added that the property was valued at approximately ZiG1.8 million, with losses estimated at ZiG700,000, while items worth around ZiG$1.1 million were salvaged. He added:
“The roof of the building was affected, and the fire had started spreading towards a big servant quarters, but firefighters managed to contain it just in time.”
Moyo confirmed that a nine-kilogramme gas cylinder had exploded, but the team managed to contain the situation.
He added that two other gas tanks were secured, along with a solar installation, and no injuries were reported.
