Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Tawanda Chirewa has described his club and national teammate, Marshal Munetsi, as a mentor who helps him stay grounded.
Speaking to Zimpapers Sports Hub on Monday, Chirewa, who came on as a substitute in Wolves’ 1–0 defeat to Aston Villa at Villa Park on Sunday, said he speaks with the Warriors vice-captain every day. He said:
“He is someone I talk to day in and day out, and he kind of mentors me and makes me stay focused.
“We both know how much we care about playing for Zimbabwe, and it’s something we have an alignment about.
“We will do anything for our nation, and when we go to AFCON, I think you guys will see the best versions we can give.”
Chirewa said he does not think about the AFCON finals every day, as they have to deal with Wolves’ difficult situation in the English Premier League.
He added, however, that he believes the Warriors can produce something special at the tournament, which kicks off in Morocco later this month.
Wolverhampton Wanderers’ 2025/26 campaign has been tough, with the club rooted to the bottom of the Premier League table and enduring a poor run of form. They lost all five of their league matches in November.
Chirewa also said he is open to playing in different positions if it gives him more opportunities on the pitch. He said:
“I definitely can play a few positions… I would say for Zimbabwe I play a bit higher than I do for Wolves, and it’s good because if that’s the way I can get minutes, I am happy to do it, and I think my game is quite versatile and as long as I show it, I have no issues playing anywhere in midfield.”
Zimbabwe have been drawn in Group B for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, alongside Egypt, South Africa and Angola.
The Warriors open their campaign against Egypt on 23 December at the Grand Stade de Marrakech.
They then face South Africa on 28 December at the Stade Agadir, before rounding off their group fixtures against Angola on 2 January at the Grand Stade de Marrakech.
