Warriors head coach Mario Marinica has recalled Alec Mudimu from international retirement to strengthen Zimbabwe’s defence ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals.
Mudimu, 30, who currently plays for Welsh side Flint Town United, has been included in the provisional 55-man squad for the tournament.
His recall comes as a surprise, as he had announced his retirement from international football in January 2025, after three years without a call-up.
Mudimu now becomes the latest member of Zimbabwe’s 2021 AFCON squad to be brought back from international retirement.
Earlier recalls included former captain Knowledge Musona and star forward Khama Billiat, who were persuaded to return by former coach Michael Nees. Despite featuring in the qualifiers, Billiat has not been included in the final AFCON squad.
Mudimu made his Warriors debut under coach Sunday Chidzambwa in 2018 during a four-nation invitational tournament in Zambia.
He went on to represent Zimbabwe at two AFCON tournaments and in the COSAFA Cup, winning the trophy in the latter competition.
He also captained the national team during the preliminary round of the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Somalia.
At club level, Mudimu has enjoyed a varied career across England, Wales, Moldova, Turkey, Georgia, and Tunisia, featuring for sides including Stalybridge Celtic, Radcliffe Borough, Northwich Victoria, Stockport Town, Cefn Druids, Sheriff Tiraspol, Ankaraspor, Torpedo Kutaisi, Altrincham, Saburtalo Tbilisi, Caernarfon Town, and Olympique de Béja.
