A man arrested for allegedly raping a Grade Seven pupil at Rezende Bus Terminus in Harare’s central business district in July 2025 has told the court that he is incapable of sexual intercourse because he is handicapped and does not have testicles.
Givemore Mutape appeared before Harare regional magistrate Fadzai Mthombeni on Monday, 24 November, where he pleaded not guilty to the charge of rape. He requested that the magistrate order a medical examination to verify his claims.
Prosecutor Chido Gohori alleged that on 19 July 2025, the schoolgirl left home around midday to collect money for extra lessons from her stepfather.
They were due to meet at the corner of Leopold Takawira and Jason Moyo Street in Harare’s CBD, where she was handed US$10.
When she attempted to board a commuter omnibus to return home, touts allegedly blocked her entry. At that point, Mutape is said to have approached her, pretending to assist, before directing her into a parked white kombi.
The girl sat alone on the back seat, and the State alleges Mutape followed her inside, locked the doors, and raped her after placing a white cloth over her mouth. She was later released and returned home.
On 21 July, her uncle raised concerns at her school about her late return, prompting a teacher to interview her. It was during this interview that she disclosed the alleged sexual abuse.
Mutape, however, insisted in court that he could not have committed the offence, arguing that his physical condition made sexual activity impossible.
He also denied being a tout, claiming instead that he repairs car radios. On the day in question, he said he was fixing a radio in a kombi belonging to a man identified only as Khule.
According to Mutape, the schoolgirl approached Khule, asking about a rank marshal named Night Mashayamanja.
Khule reportedly referred her to Mutape, who had attended the same school as Night in their youth.
Mutape said he informed the girl that he did not know Night’s whereabouts but offered to pass on a message. She allegedly asked him to tell Night that “his person” was looking for him.
Mutape told the court that Night returned about an hour later, at which point he relayed the message and described the girl.
Night appeared to recognise her from the description and borrowed Mutape’s phone to contact her.
Mutape said he was shocked when police later identified him through his WhatsApp profile picture and accused him of raping the girl, whom he believed to be Night’s girlfriend.
