A two-month-old baby girl reportedly went missing in Gweru’s Central Business District (CBD) on Saturday afternoon.
The infant was left in the care of her six-year-old sister while their mother went to buy bananas.
Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko, spokesperson for the Zimbabwe Republic Police in Midlands Province, confirmed the incident. He said:
“A two-month-old baby girl was allegedly snatched by an unknown person at Edgars Stores veranda, Gweru Central Business District on November 15 at about 1:40 PM.”
Inspector Mahoko said the mother, 26-year-old Faith Jakaza, had just finished breastfeeding her baby when she briefly left the children to buy bananas. He said:
“She briefly left the baby on the lap of the baby’s six-year-old sister, going to buy bananas from a nearby vendor.
“On turning back after a few minutes, the mother discovered the elder daughter now without the baby, saying the baby had been snatched away.”
Insp. Mahoko said Jakaza shouted for help while searching for her baby, but the infant was nowhere to be found.
He appealed to the public to provide any information that could help identify the person responsible and help find the baby.
Insp. Mahoko also urged mothers and caregivers to always keep young children under close supervision.
