The Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS) has confirmed a serious security breach at Plumtree Prison following the escape of a convicted rapist, Mike Mathe.

The circumstances surrounding his disappearance are currently under intense investigation.

Mathe’s escape reportedly occurred in the early hours of Saturday morning. He allegedly managed to break out by cutting through the prison’s burglar bars using a hacksaw blade.

The ZPCS spokesperson, Chief Superintendent Meya Khanyezi, said that security teams were immediately deployed to track Mathe’s movements as soon as the escape was discovered.

Given the method used, there is suspicion that the incident may have been an “inside job.”

The ZPCS is now appealing to the public for any information that could lead to the swift recapture of Mike Mathe. Said Khanyezi:

“The Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service wishes to inform the public that an inmate unlawfully escaped from Plumtree Prison.

“We want to assure the nation that investigations into this incident are currently underway, and we are working diligently to apprehend the escaped inmate and prevent any further occurrences.

“As an institution dedicated to the incarceration and rehabilitation of offenders, we remain committed to our mandate of ensuring the safety and security of society.

“We uphold the highest standards of professionalism and are continuously reviewing our procedures to strengthen our operations and maintain public confidence.”

Chief Superintendent Khanyezi called upon community members to remain vigilant and immediately report any information that could lead to Mathe’s arrest. She said:

“We call on the community to remain vigilant and report any information that may assist in the swift recapture of the inmate.

“The Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service is committed to upholding the rule of law and ensuring the safety of all citizens.”

She warned the public not to approach the fugitive if sighted, but to instead report the sighting immediately to law enforcement authorities.
