A Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service (ZPCS) inmate has turned his time in incarceration into an academic achievement, graduating from the University of Zimbabwe with an Upper Second Class degree.
Robert Zivengwa graduated with a Bachelor of Science Honours Degree in Biological Sciences, Upper Second Class (2:1).
According to the ZPCS, Zivengwa’s achievement reflects the transformative power of correctional education and the opportunities available to inmates to acquire knowledge, develop skills and prepare for productive lives beyond incarceration.
“His graduation is a source of pride for the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service and a powerful reminder that a correctional sentence need not bring learning and personal development to a standstill,” the ZPCS said.
“Through education, determination and access to opportunities, Zivengwa has demonstrated that the journey towards personal transformation can continue even behind prison walls.”
The ZPCS said Zivengwa’s success highlights its ongoing rehabilitation programmes, which allow inmates to pursue formal education while serving their sentences, with a view to reintegration into society as productive citizens.
