Jabulani Thabang Moyo, a Zimbabwean national wanted in South Africa for escaping lawful custody and in connection with the murder of two police detectives, Warrant Officer Vuyisile Sintwa and Sergeant Simon Masenye, escaped a shootout with members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) on Saturday, 15 November.
Moyo has been on the wanted list since 8 August 2025, following a deadly ambush in the Roodepoort CBD.
On that day, two police detectives transporting Moyo from the Roodepoort Magistrates’ Court were ambushed and killed.
Moyo, who was facing charges for a business robbery dating back to February 2023, managed to escape custody during the attack.
On Saturday, Moyo was confronted by police while with two other suspects. The suspects opened fire, and when police returned fire, one suspect was killed, another was arrested, and Moyo escaped.
In a statement, SAPS said Moyo and his accomplices had been planning a business robbery in the Honeydew area of Johannesburg on the same day. The statement reads:
“One suspect was fatally wounded and the second suspect arrested in Cosmo City, Johannesburg District, as police were chasing suspects that include Jabulani Moyo, who is wanted for escaping from lawful custody and the murder of two police officers in Roodepoort in August this year.
“Police from crime intelligence received information about suspects who were planning to commit a business robbery in Fairlands and Honeydew.
“On Saturday, 15 November 2025, police spotted two vehicles, a grey Audi and a white VW Polo, that matched the description of cars driven by the suspects.
“As police were approaching the cars, the suspects alighted and fired shots at the police; a shootout ensued.
“Other suspects fled on foot, while two suspects jumped into the VW Polo and sped off. Police gave chase until Cosmo City, where one suspect was fatally shot and the other suspect arrested.
“Police recovered two unlicensed firearms, an AK-47 rifle and a pistol, with ammunition.
“A search for the suspects who fled the scene, including Moyo, is underway.
“The arrested suspect is facing charges that include attempted murder, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, amongst other crimes.”
