A 41-year-old man was badly burnt and later arrested after allegedly trying to vandalise and steal from a Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC) transformer near All Souls Mission Hospital, police have confirmed.
The suspect, Gift Mawodza of Kakomwe Village, is currently under police guard while receiving treatment for severe burns at the same hospital. The incident occurred on November 2, 2025.
CID spokesperson Detective Inspector Rachel Muteweri said Mawodza was arrested after police received a tip-off about his condition. She said:
“On November 2, 2025, the suspect, along with his accomplices, approached a ZETDC transformer near All Souls Mission Hospital with the intent to vandalise it and steal armoured cables.
“During the process of harvesting the copper cables, Mawodza was burnt, prompting his accomplices to flee.”
Detective Inspector Muteweri said police are now searching for Mawodza’s alleged accomplices, Simbarashe Tungamirai and Paiben Muparo.
She also warned members of the public against vandalising national infrastructure, saying such crimes hinder the country’s development and carry a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years in prison.
