The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) has announced the appointment of Romanian national Marian (Mario) Marinica as the new head coach of the Zimbabwe senior men’s football team, the Warriors, on a one-year contract.

In a statement issued late Tuesday night, ZIFA said Marinica holds a UEFA Pro Licence and brings over 25 years of international coaching and technical experience across four continents — Africa, Europe, Asia and South America.

Marinica, who guided Malawi to their best-ever Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finish in 2022 and helped propel Liberia up the FIFA rankings in 2024, also holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Sports Coaching from South Bank University in England and a Diploma in Management.

Over the years, he has worked with several top clubs and national teams, including Arsenal, Chelsea, Internazionale Milano, AS Monaco, Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur, and the national teams of Paraguay, Mauritius, Malawi and Liberia.

Beyond coaching, Marinica has served as a technical director, coach educator and performance consultant, with extensive experience in player development, match analysis and grassroots football structures.

ZIFA said it believes Marinica’s reputation for empowering local coaches and integrating diaspora talent aligns closely with the association’s long-term football development vision.

Commenting on the appointment, ZIFA president Nqobile Magwizi said the Romanian’s vast experience and global exposure make him the right person to lead the Warriors into a new era. Said Magwizi:

“We are delighted to welcome Coach Marinica to Zimbabwe. His wealth of experience, modern football philosophy, and proven results at international level make him the ideal candidate to lead the Warriors into a new era.

“His appointment reflects ZIFA’s commitment to building a competitive and sustainable football structure that delivers results both on and off the pitch.”

Marinica assumes his duties with immediate effect and will oversee preparations for the upcoming international friendlies against Algeria and Qatar during the November 10–18, 2025 window, as well as lead the Warriors’ AFCON 2025 campaign scheduled for 21 December 2025 to 18 January 2026.

I wish him the best. We need a national team of capable Giant players who are intimidating….True Warriors. We no longer want short players they get overshadowed by our opponents.
