President Emmerson Mnangagwa has congratulated Tanzania’s President-elect, Samia Suluhu Hassan, on her re-election following a tightly contested election held last Wednesday.

The Tanzanian Electoral Commission announced the final results on Saturday, confirming that Hassan secured 97.66 per cent of the vote, winning in every constituency.

Hassan faced 16 candidates from smaller political parties after her main rivals were barred from contesting.

Chadema leader Tundu Lissu, who has been in jail for months on treason charges after calling for electoral reforms, and Luhaga Mpina of the ACT-Wazalendo party were among those prevented from running.

The election sparked days of violent protests across several major cities, with demonstrators denouncing the exclusion of key opposition figures and alleging widespread repression.

In a message issued on Sunday, 2 November, President Mnangagwa congratulated Hassan, saying her victory reflected the trust and confidence the people of Tanzania continue to place in her leadership. Wrote Mnangagwa:

“On behalf of the Government and people of Zimbabwe, the ruling party, ZANU-PF and indeed, on my own behalf, I wish to extend my sincere congratulations on your victory in the just concluded Presidential Elections.

“Your victory testifies to the trust and confidence that the people of the United Republic of Tanzania have in your visionary leadership and in the policies of the Party you lead, Chama Cha Mapinduzi.

“I would like to reaffirm my commitment to work closely with you, Your Excellency, to further strengthen and deepen the strong bonds of friendship and solidarity between our two countries and peoples.

“I also look forward to continuing working with you at the regional, continental and multilateral fora on issues of mutual interest and concern.”
