A soldier stationed at 41 Infantry Battalion was fatally stabbed in a suspected love triangle at a residence in Mountain Rise, Mutare, on Thursday night.

The victim, identified only as Lance Corporal Mangena, was reportedly stabbed multiple times in the abdomen by Kumbirai Mugona (45) of Chikanga Phase 2.

It is alleged that Mangena, who was attending a basic driver’s course at 3 Infantry Brigade Headquarters, had gone to visit his girlfriend, Lucia Saunyana (22).

While the two were together, Mugona, who was also in a relationship with Saunyana, allegedly phoned her saying he wanted to see her.

Saunyana reportedly told Mugona not to come, but he is said to have driven to her residence around 10:20 PM in a Toyota Hiace.

Upon realising Mugona had arrived, Saunyana allegedly ran from the house. Mugona then entered the home, found Mangena naked in bed, and reportedly returned to his vehicle to fetch a knife before stabbing the soldier multiple times in the abdomen.

After the attack, Mugona reportedly drove himself to ZRP Chikanga Police Station to surrender. Police officers found Mangena unconscious in a pool of blood. He was rushed to Mutare General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Mugona was detained at ZRP Chikanga, while Mangena’s body was taken to the hospital mortuary pending a post-mortem examination.
