Harare City Council Orders Removal Of Abandoned Vehicles From Public Spaces

Essential Tools

The City of Harare has warned residents and businesses over the illegal storage of broken-down vehicles in overnight car parks, shopping centres, streets, and open spaces.

Acting Town Clerk Phakamile Mabhena Moyo last week said lessees of guarded overnight car parks must remove any car shells, scrap, or non-functional vehicles within seven days from 23 October 2025.

Failure to comply will see the Council remove the vehicles at the owner’s expense. Said Moyo:

“In the event of failure, Council will remove the car shells at a cost to Lessees or owners of the cars.

The City of Harare will take the vehicles and shells to a junkyard or site for disused vehicles where they will be stored awaiting disposal or auctioning.”

The Council also urged residents to report any abandoned or broken-down vehicles in their areas so action can be taken promptly.

The warning follows a tragic incident in Kuwadzana Extension, where three children were discovered dead inside the boot of an abandoned vehicle.

Preliminary investigations suggest the children may have climbed into the boot, accidentally locking themselves inside, and subsequently suffocated.
