Ibhetshu LikaZulu, a local pressure group, has urged all Zimbabweans, including workers, students, churches, civil society, traditional leaders, and those in the diaspora, to come together and use every democratic means available to resist ZANU-PF’s latest plan to extend President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s term beyond 2028.
Secretary General Mbuso Fuzwayo said Zimbabweans have both a legal and moral duty to defend the 2013 Constitution from manipulation by political elites. He said:
“This naked attempt to manipulate the Constitution represents an assault on Zimbabwe’s democracy and a betrayal of the aspirations of millions who sacrificed for a democratic, accountable and prosperous Zimbabwe.”
Fuzwayo said Zimbabwe’s 2013 Constitution was adopted through a people-driven process, and any attempt to change it through a partisan parliamentary vote undermines the will of the people and weakens democracy.
He added that such a move is not only legally questionable but morally wrong, turning Parliament into a tool for consolidating power rather than protecting the people’s mandate. Fuzwayo said:
“We must defend the 2013 Constitution, the product of national consensus and struggle, from being mutilated to serve personal ambition.”
Fuzwayo warned that extending President Mnangagwa’s rule would not benefit ordinary citizens. Instead, it would deepen corruption and looting of national resources, worsen economic decline and poverty, suppress dissent, violate human rights, and undermine democratic institutions as state organs are captured to protect the ruling elite.
He added that ZANU PF’s move is a self-serving attempt to preserve the privileges of those in power, rather than address the country’s pressing challenges.
