Former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga has died in India at the age of 80. He passed away on Wednesday, 15 October 2025, from cardiac arrest while undergoing treatment in Kochi.

The Hindu reported that Odinga collapsed during a morning walk at an Ayurvedic eye hospital and research centre in Koothattukulam, Ernakulam district, Kerala.

He was rushed to Devamatha Hospital nearby, where he was pronounced dead at around 9:52 AM, according to a spokesman for the Ayurvedic facility. His body remains at the hospital, police said.

The spokesman added that Odinga and his family had been visiting the hospital, which had treated his daughter.

A police officer confirmed that details of his death had been reported to the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) for the necessary procedures.

Odinga, a towering figure in Kenyan politics, served as the country’s prime minister from 2008 to 2013. He ran unsuccessfully for the presidency five times—in 1997, 2007, 2013, 2017, and 2022.

His two most contested campaigns, in 2007 and 2017, led to widespread political violence, with the 2007 election sparking clashes that killed about 1,300 people and displaced hundreds of thousands.

Beyond electoral politics, Odinga was a prominent democracy activist. His work helped secure two of Kenya’s most significant reforms: the introduction of multiparty democracy in 1991 and the adoption of a new constitution in 2010.
