Two passengers were shot dead and robbed inside a Delta bus travelling to Zimbabwe along South Africa’s N1 freeway on Wednesday night.
Disturbing images circulating online show a child clutching her lifeless mother, covered in blood, while seated inside the bus.
Other photos depict the body of the deceased man and the bus surrounded by emergency medical services vehicles.
Limpopo Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said the horrific incident occurred before 10 PM, roughly eight kilometres from the Nyl Plaza tollgate. He said:
“Reports indicate that the complainant, a 42-year-old bus driver from Zimbabwe, had departed from the Power House (bus station in Johannesburg) driving a Volvo 60-seater bus with 54 passengers on board.
“The driver had picked up passengers at various points, including Midrand and Pretoria en route to Zimbabwe.”
It is alleged that during the journey, two male passengers seated at the back of the bus suddenly produced firearms and aimed them at the other passengers.
One male passenger, approximately 30 years old and not yet identified, tried to disarm one of the attackers, while several others also attempted to intervene. Said Ledwaba:
“During the struggle, the suspects fired several shots inside the bus, fatally wounding the 30-year-old male passenger and an unknown female, estimated to be 25 years old.”
The suspects then stole an undisclosed amount of cash and mobile phones from the passengers.
Police said that an unknown vehicle, make, model, and registration number still unknown, had been following the bus and stopped behind it after the shooting.
The attackers fled the bus, got into the vehicle, and sped away from the scene.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) has opened cases for two counts of murder and armed robbery.
No arrests have been made so far, and officers in Mokopane, within Limpopo’s Waterberg District, are continuing their investigations.
