A self-proclaimed traditional healer drowned while performing rituals at Nyachowa Falls under Chief Zimunya in Mutare last Sunday, and his body was discovered floating five days later.
The deceased, Vernon Ndemadzirwa (31) from Hore Village, Chief Zvimba in Chinhoyi, was found on Friday by a villager, who reported the matter to Chitakatira Police Post.
Manicaland Acting Police Spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka, confirmed the incident to Chipinge Times.
He said Ndemadzirwa was a traditionalist who had previously conducted rituals at Nyachowa Falls, and last Sunday marked the third such ritual he performed at the site.
Ndemadzirwa was accompanied by Ryan Tinofara Hove (21) from Unit K, Chitungwiza. Around 5 PM, Ndemadzirwa entered deeper waters during the ritual and tragically drowned.
Traditional leaders present at the ceremony assured villagers that Ndemadzira had been taken by mermaids and would resurface within two days.
When he did not reappear, his lifeless body was discovered on Friday at around 4 PM by Raphael Zimunya.
A report was immediately filed at Chitakatira Police Post. Ndemadzira’s body was retrieved and taken to Victoria Chitepo Provincial Hospital mortuary.
