Primary and Secondary Education Minister Torerayi Moyo has defended the government’s claim that 600 schools have been built across Zimbabwe since 2022, saying the figures reflect a multi-sectoral national effort rather than “cooked-up” statistics.

Addressing educators and union leaders, Moyo provided a breakdown of the school projects.

He said government-funded initiatives account for 25 schools through the National Building Society, while faith-based organisations have contributed several others, including eight schools from Johane Marange and seven from the Latter-Day Saints.

Moyo added that over 100 schools have been built through NGOs, corporate sponsors, and private initiatives, alongside numerous community-led projects in rural areas supported by the government.

He said foreign partnerships, such as with Algeria and the OPEC Fund, which has pledged US$20 million, have also contributed to the construction drive.

The minister said the government is compiling a public register of all schools, detailing names, locations, and photographs, to ensure full transparency.

Moyo expressed confidence that the government remains on track to meet its 2025 target of 200 new schools, with construction ongoing in provinces including Mashonaland Central, Matabeleland South, and Manicaland.

He described the schools not merely as buildings but as “beacons of opportunity” for Zimbabwean children.

On the broader issue of education funding, the minister welcomed a proposal for a mineral levy to support school development, saying it aligns with the government’s Education 5.0 vision, which focuses on innovation, inclusivity, and infrastructure.
