A heartbreaking discovery was made in Kuwadzana Extension, Harare, on Friday when the bodies of three missing children were found in the boot of a long-abandoned car.
The green Mercedes-Benz, in which the children were found, had reportedly been parked in the area for about three years.
The victims, siblings Anenyasha (1) and Anopaishe Muzanangu (4), and their neighbour Raymond Mukudzeyi (3), went missing on Wednesday, 1 October, after they were last seen playing near a car park close to their homes.
Following their disappearance, residents launched an intense search and circulated the children’s pictures on social media platforms, including WhatsApp, amid fears that they may have been kidnapped.
After two days of searching with no success, an alert resident noticed a foul smell coming from one of the parked cars. When residents forced open the boot, they discovered the three bodies inside.
Initial reports suggest the children may have died from suffocation, though some locals still suspect they were abducted and later dumped in the car.
Bynet Bunu, who manages the car park, told The Herald that contrary to claims on social media, residents did not carry out a thorough search of the vehicle but only checked inside parked cars and the surrounding area. He said:
“The father of the two deceased children called me to say they were missing. We then initiated a search, looking around the cars and in nearby churches. We didn’t hear any sounds or complaints at that time.
“While we were searching, I heard people saying they had seen the bodies. This is the first car park in this area. The boot could have remained closed tightly.”
The children had been playing with another child, who said they wandered off from him before disappearing.
This tragedy follows a similar incident last year in Southlea Park, Harare, where four children were found dead after being trapped inside a locked, non-functional car and suffocating.
Their lifeless bodies were discovered inside the vehicle after they had gone in and accidentally shut the door.
