A 50-year-old man from Nyabira has been arrested after his three dogs killed a 13-year-old girl on Monday.
Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the incident in a statement on Wednesday.
He said the deceased, Caroline Chari, was walking home from school with four classmates when the dogs charged at them.
The children fled in different directions, but the dogs pursued Caroline, caught up with her, and fatally mauled her. The statement reads:
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police is investigating the death of a 13-year-old girl, Caroline Chari, who was mauled to death by three vicious dogs at St Mannocks Farm, Nyabira, on 29th September 2025.
“The victim was coming from school in the company of four schoolmates when three marauding dogs attacked and chased them. The children ran in different directions, the dogs pursued and caught up with the victim, resulting in her death.
“The Police has since arrested the owner of the three dogs, Gift Jambaya (50). It is sad to note that the vicious dogs were last vaccinated in 2024 and the owner ignored the Department of Veterinary Services’ 2025 rabies vaccination outreach programme. More details will be released in due course.
“Meanwhile, the Zimbabwe Republic Police is disturbed by the trend of vicious dogs being allowed to move without a leash, guidance or being kept loose by the owners. It is the responsibility of dog owners to protect the public and strictly comply with public safety measures.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police has intensified operations with Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals inspectors, local authorities, Ministry of Health and Child Care to decisively deal with stray dogs and impound all dogs which are being kept in residential areas with no due regard for the safety of Zimbabweans being prioritised.
“The public should report anyone keeping and allowing vicious dogs to roam around streets and suburbs to the police through the Complaints Desk number 0242703631 or WhatsApp 0712800197.”
