Joburg Public Safety MMC Mgcini Tshwaku has criticised Operation Dudula for allegedly preventing people from accessing healthcare facilities, calling the operation “unlawful and inhumane.”

The condemnation follows reports that a sick child may have died after a mother was blocked from entering a clinic in Alexandra.

Operation Dudula has been blocking clinics in Johannesburg as part of its campaign to prioritise South African citizens over foreign nationals in access to public services — especially healthcare.

The group claims that undocumented migrants are overburdening the system, and they argue that South Africans should come first.

They allege that foreign nationals are “crowding out” locals in clinics and hospitals.

They claim that undocumented migrants are accessing services without contributing to the system.

On Thursday morning, Tshwaku, alongside Social Development MMC Ennie Makhafola, visited Jeppe Clinic for an oversight inspection.

The officials said the visit aimed to ensure the clinic’s operations continued without disruption and to restore public confidence in accessing health services safely.

City spokesperson Rhulani Mgwambane said the inspection was prompted by growing concerns that community members seeking healthcare were allegedly being threatened and intimidated by individuals claiming to “protect South Africans.”

He added that the visit was intended to safeguard patients and ensure uninterrupted access to medical care.
