A Redcliff Municipality ambulance technician and two accomplices have been convicted by the Kwekwe Magistrates’ Court for stealing cash and airtime from a road accident victim they were meant to assist.

Edius Mugonegwa (40), along with Pride Makamba (25) and Anashe Mukwamba (23), stole US$1,260 in cash and US$10 in airtime from the victim on 7 September 2025, while responding to an accident along the Kwekwe-Redcliff Road.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), bloodstained cash fell from the victim’s pocket while Mugonegwa was administering first aid.

Instead of safeguarding it, the trio allegedly conspired to take the money for personal use. The victim discovered the theft upon regaining consciousness at Kwekwe General Hospital and reported the incident to the police.

Swift investigations by CID Kwekwe led to their arrests, with part of the stolen money recovered.

Mugonegwa was sentenced to 18 months in prison, with three months suspended for five years and 15 months set aside for 825 hours of community service.

Makamba and Mukwamba each received 12-month sentences, with three months suspended for five years and nine months set aside for 315 hours of community service.

The NPA condemned the abuse of trust, stressing that medical and emergency workers have a duty to protect victims, not exploit them.
