ZANU PF spokesperson and Politburo member, Ambassador Christopher Mutsvangwa, has challenged Zimbabweans who believe that businessman Kudakwashe Reginald Tagwirei is corrupt to formally report him to the police or the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC), rather than relying on speculation and social media claims.

Speaking to the press in Harare on Monday, Mutsvangwa defended the Sakunda Holdings founder, insisting that, to his knowledge, Tagwirei had not engaged in corrupt dealings. Said Mutsvangwa:

“If anyone has evidence that Mr. Tagwirei has acted corruptly, the correct thing is to report him to the relevant statutory bodies. We have the police, we have ZACC – those are the institutions mandated to deal with corruption.”

Tagwirei, a fuel and energy mogul whose name has long courted controversy, has often been accused of receiving inflated government contracts and special favours because of his close ties to political elites. The United States government sanctioned him in 2020, alleging that his business activities had contributed to economic mismanagement and public suffering in Zimbabwe, allegations he has repeatedly denied.

In recent months, Tagwirei’s name has dominated political discussions following claims that President Emmerson Mnangagwa was grooming him as a possible successor. The reports have drawn sharp criticism from within and outside the ruling party, with some activists branding him “Chigananda” – a Shona slang term for “criminal” – and calling for his arrest.

Mutsvangwa, however, said such accusations remained unsubstantiated until proven before competent authorities. He added:

“We must respect institutions. Rumours and name-calling do not substitute for evidence. If there is wrongdoing, let it be established through due process.”

The remarks are likely to spark debate in both political and civic spaces, as Zimbabwe continues to grapple with widespread public concern over corruption, elite privilege, and accountability.
