The Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) confirmed on Friday that its Director General, Eltah Nengomasha, has resigned, bringing her tenure with the regulator to an unexpected close.

Although Nengomasha had been serving a three-month notice period set to end in October, sources revealed that her departure occurred earlier than anticipated. She was appointed substantive Director General in March 2023, a position she held amid both achievements and challenges.

Her tenure experienced turbulence in March 2024, when she was suspended for alleged misconduct, only to be reinstated a year later. Despite these setbacks, Nengomasha credited her time at the SRC with meaningful progress. In her farewell message, she said:

“Sport is richer because of the synergies created. I am grateful for the opportunity to have served my country at the realm of sports administration. I wish the sector all the best in its endeavours.”

The SRC acknowledged her contributions, particularly in strengthening governance structures and enhancing stakeholder engagement during her leadership.

In the interim, Peter Mudzimiri, Director of Legal and Corporate Services, has been appointed Acting Director General with immediate effect. The commission noted that the process to recruit a substantive replacement will be announced in due course.

Nengomasha’s departure marks the end of a notable, if sometimes controversial, chapter in Zimbabwe’s sports administration, leaving observers to watch closely for the next steps in leadership at the SRC.
