The Gwanda Magistrates’ Court has sentenced three people to five years in prison for their roles in a robbery at Freda Mine.
Conilias Ndlovu (36), Junior Sibanda (18), and Renika Takaruva (28) were found guilty of assaulting a victim with a shovel, threatening him with an axe and a sjambok, and forcibly stealing a 100-watt solar panel, a small radio, a shovel, and a cellphone on 10 August 2025. The total value of the stolen property was US$450.
The court ordered 11 months of each sentence to be suspended on condition of good behaviour, while one month was suspended on the condition that each offender pays US$50 in restitution. Three accomplices involved in the crime remain at large.
Police investigations led to the arrest of the trio and the recovery of some of the stolen items.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has urged communities to work closely with law enforcement and report any suspicious activities, stressing that timely intervention can help maintain public safety.
