A 33-year-old man from Figtree has been arrested for allegedly raping three goats, two of which later died from the abuse.

Brighton Mkandla of Cliffton Farm is accused of repeatedly sneaking into villagers’ goat pens at night to commit the acts.

The shocking allegations came to light after three villagers, Cecilia Sibanda (85), Mayibongwe Ndlovu (28) and Elmon Ndlovu (65), discovered their goats either dead or injured, with clear signs of sexual assault.

On 15 August 2025, Elmon reportedly rushed to his pen after hearing his goats bleating around 10 PM.

Armed with a torch, he was stunned to find Mkandla half-naked, trousers around his knees, violating one of his goats.

When Elmon shouted his name, the suspect bolted into the bush. Elmon and his neighbour, Trynos Nyathi, later tracked footprints from the scene straight to Mkandla’s homestead.

Just over two weeks later, on 31 August, Sibanda allegedly caught Mkandla in her pen committing the same act.

He fled again, but the next morning one of her goats was found dead, bearing bruises and semen stains.

Around the same time, Mayibongwe also discovered one of his goats dead in its kraal, showing signs of strangulation and abuse.

Villagers, furious over the repeated attacks, confronted Mkandla at his home and dragged him to the police after he reportedly confessed.

He has since appeared before Plumtree magistrate Joshua Nembaware charged with three counts of bestiality.

Mkandla pleaded not guilty and was remanded in custody to 12 September for trial.

Sheila Nyathi is representing the State.

Some villagers are now demanding that he be banished from the area, fearing he may target more livestock.
