Bulawayo Struggles With Donkey Menace In Suburbs

Bulawayo City Council has raised concern over a growing donkey problem in several suburbs, including Cowdray Park, Pumula and Magwegwe North, where the animals are roaming freely and destroying residents’ nutrition gardens.

According to the latest council minutes, most of the donkeys come from nearby peri-urban areas such as St Peters and the resettlement areas beyond Khami Prison Complex. Once in the city, they wander into residential areas, causing damage to gardens, especially at homes without proper security.

Council also noted that the situation has been made worse by the shortage of vehicles to drive the animals back to their original areas. The council said:

“Donkeys are becoming a menace in the city especially in suburbs such as Cowdray Park, Pumula and Magwegwe North among others which are close to peri-urban areas.

“The Lands inspectorate is highly incapacitated to remove the donkeys around the affected suburbs back to the peri -urban areas due to transport challenges.

“The main utility vehicle for that purpose is parked at the council workshop for repairs.”

Last month, a joint blitz by council rangers, council security and the ZRP in Greater Bulawayo saw the seizure of trucks, scotch carts and equipment used in illegal mining, sand poaching and wood harvesting. Reads the minutes:

“Two trucks and four scotch carts were impounded for sand and wood poaching, respectively.

“42 tickets were issued for various offences against sand poaching suspects with 36 tickets paid and a sum of US$2 216 was realised.

“54 surveillance patrols were conducted at illegal gold panning sites such as Mahatshula, Parklands and part of Emhlangeni.

“Three compressors, two generators, one jackhammer and two manual pulleys were confiscated.”
