A Chinhoyi University of Technology (CUT) student, Panashe Mwinga, tragically died in a road accident on Thursday, just hours after graduating with a Bachelor’s Degree in Visual and Communication Multimedia.
The accident occurred near the Gwebi River as the family was travelling from Chinhoyi to Harare. Mwinga’s father, an engineer who was driving, sustained serious injuries in the crash.
Mashonaland West Provincial Police Spokesperson, Inspector Ian Kohwera, confirmed that the accident happened at around 7 PM at the 70km peg along the Harare-Chinhoyi Road. He said:
“On approaching the 70km peg, the driver lost control of the vehicle and it veered off the road before rolling several times and landing in a ditch.”
Inspector Kohwera said there were four family members in the car at the time of the accident. He added that the other three family members are still receiving treatment in the hospital.
CUT Students’ Representative Council spokesperson, Malvin Saint Madanda, also confirmed the tragic accident in a statement. He said:
“It is with profound (regret) and a deep sense of loss that we inform you of the passing of Panashe Mwinga, a gifted young lady who graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Visual and Communication Multimedia.
“Panashe was involved in a fatal road accident on the evening of August 28 2025, near Mapinga close to Gwebi River while travelling with her siblings and both parents.
“Her untimely passing is a profound loss to the university community and to all who had the privilege of sharing her journey.”
Mwinga is the fourth student at Chinhoyi University of Technology to die in tragic circumstances over the past nine months, with two students killed in accidents and another student having taken his own life just a few weeks ago.
