A Harare kombi driver has been jailed for two years and permanently banned from driving heavy vehicles after a reckless driving incident that nearly caused chaos at a busy city intersection.
Ruzvidzo Freedom (32), of Hatcliffe, was convicted by the Harare Magistrates’ Court for driving against oncoming traffic at the Second Street (Sam Nujoma) and Upper East Road intersection during peak hour.
The court heard that Freedom, who was behind the wheel of a Toyota Hiace, ignored traffic regulations, entered a one-way lane, and obstructed other motorists.
Although no injuries were recorded, the magistrate ruled that his conduct posed a serious threat to public safety.
In addition to his two-year effective prison sentence, Freedom’s driver’s licence was cancelled, and he has been permanently disqualified from driving vehicles in classes 2, 4, and 5, which include minibuses, trucks, and heavy vehicles.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said the judgment sends a strong warning to reckless drivers. It said:
“Reckless driving will not be tolerated. Driving against traffic endangers lives and can cause deadly accidents.
“Offenders will face harsh penalties, including imprisonment and lifetime driving bans.
“Public safety comes first. Every reckless driver is a potential killer on our roads.”
