Several passengers narrowly escaped death on Monday when a Sekuru Ndife Bus Service coach overturned along the Masvingo-Beitbridge Road.

According to Matabeleland South police spokesperson, Inspector Chiratidzo Dube, the bus, which was carrying 20 passengers, overturned near the 276km peg while heading towards Lutumba Business Centre.

The driver reportedly fled the scene immediately after the accident and could not be located. Said Dube:

“The driver, identified as Makhahuhle Dube, attempted to overtake two vehicles that were towing each other at a bridge.

“He used the left side of the road, misjudged the manoeuvre and rammed onto concrete pillars.”

Dube said the impact of the crash dismantled four pillars of the bridge. The injured passengers were taken to Beitbridge District Hospital for treatment.

Dube also appealed to the public for information on the driver’s whereabouts and urged anyone with details to contact the nearest police station.

We wish speedy recoveries for all the injured. Some decisions made by drivers sometimes leaves a lot to be desired. One just wonders why he undertook overtaking on the left side when he could just have waited for a clear space ahead?
