A 40-year-old inmate who briefly escaped from lawful custody earlier this month has been sentenced to an additional four months in prison after being found guilty of jailbreak.

The convict, John Nyika, was serving a 24-month sentence for unlawful entry when he escaped from Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS) officers on 4 August 2025.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), Nyika was part of a prison work party fetching firewood at a farm along Chiundura Road in Kwekwe. At around 2:50 PM, he asked to relieve himself in a nearby bush but failed to return.

The ZPCS Prisons Intelligence team was immediately deployed to track him down. Later that evening, at around 8:34 PM, Nyika was apprehended at the Senderai Roundabout while trying to secure transport to his rural home in Zhombe. He was taken back into custody without incident.

Nyika appeared before the Kwekwe Magistrates’ Court and was sentenced to seven months’ imprisonment, three of which were suspended on condition of good behaviour.

He will serve four effective months for the escape, on top of the 24 months he is already serving.
