A Zimbabwean explosives and demining specialist, Henry Martin Douglas Macharaga, has died in Argentina after an explosive device detonated in his hands. He was 52.

The incident, which remains under investigation, occurred on 19 August along National Route 34, one of Argentina’s major highways that stretches to the Bolivian border.

Macharaga, originally from Chirumanzu in the Midlands province, had been employed in Argentina by The Development Initiative (TDI), a company that specialises in demining operations.

On his LinkedIn profile, he described himself as an experienced explosives and demining expert, having worked for decades across conflict and post-conflict zones.

His career spanned assignments in Azerbaijan, South Sudan, Mali, Somalia, Afghanistan, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Kuwait, Lebanon, Angola, Mozambique, Central America and South America.

Colleagues praised his professionalism and courage, saying he dedicated his life to making some of the world’s most dangerous environments safer.

His family, who described the loss as devastating, have appealed to his employer for urgent assistance in repatriating his body to Zimbabwe and providing financial support for his young family.

He is survived by his wife and two children.
