Police have expressed concern over increasing murder cases involving people with mental health challenges across Zimbabwe.

Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed a horrific incident in Makoni Village, Tengwe, on 18 August 2025.

Patrick Makufa, a mental health patient, allegedly struck 55-year-old Constaine Mabheka multiple times on the head with an axe handle, killing her on the spot.

The suspect then fatally struck four-year-old Kunashe Mabheka once and attacked 19-year-old Atilda Mharadze multiple times, leaving all three victims dead at the scene.

Police have since confirmed that the suspect has been arrested. Said Comm. Nyathi:

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police urges the public to exercise caution, particularly when interacting with individuals with mental health challenges.

“We implore families and guardians of individuals with mental health issues to seek professional help and ensure that they receive the necessary support and treatment on time.”

MTSRIEP. The cases are rising for sure and truly worrisome these days. With the number of mentally challenged persons in our communities we never know what will happen next if they are not given their medicine on time.

This is bad, are these mental health patients possibly zanu pf party supporters maybe? or maybe possibly graduates from chitepo school of ideology, and the “schooling” has fried their brains?
