Zimbabwean opposition politician Job Sikhala has condemned the growing trend on social media where women activists are insulted and demeaned through anonymous accounts, calling it a cowardly tactic aimed at silencing female voices.
Sikhala was responding to a post by a user identified as Mandungwani, who referred to opposition activist Lynne Stactia as a “whore” of the late former Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai.
The former Zengeza West MP described such attacks as “the most unsophisticated and stupid method” to suppress women’s voices. He said:
“The most unsophisticated and stupid method to drown a woman from speaking out her mind is to label her “hure” and all undignified descriptions bordering on private parts and a whole lot of nonsense.
“It’s generally done by the ghosts. I have seen it done on quite a number of women like Fadzayi Mahere, Linda Masarira, and a whole lot of them.”
Sikhala urged women to resist such bullying, which he said undermines the entire female gender. He said:
“It’s time women stand up to this bullying bordering on undermining the female gender. Women have every right to engage in any form of public life they want.
“They are entitled to do whatever they want with their lives. No one is a prefect for people’s lives. They have every right to do as they wish and want in life.”
Sikhala further stressed that gender-based attacks are cowardly acts. He said:
“Throwing aspersions on the grounds of their gender is cowardice. True men don’t hide behind ghost accounts.
“They come out open and speak their mind. This demonstrates the kind of cowards we have among men who come in the form of ghost accounts to silence the voices of women through stupid labels.”
He defended Lynne Stactia, Mahere, and Masarira, insisting that they are not prostitutes and that they are entitled to their politics, opinions, and public engagement.
