The University of Zimbabwe (UZ) said that the urgent court application filed by the Association of University Teachers (AUT) seeking to stop the institution’s 44th Graduation Ceremony has been withdrawn.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, 12 August, UZ said application, lodged on 8 August 2025 under case number HCH4026/25, sought to interdict the graduation ceremony scheduled for 15 August 2025. The statement reads:
“The University of Zimbabwe wishes to inform its stakeholders of the outcome of the urgent court application filed by the Association of University Teachers (AUT) on 8 August 2025, under case number HCH4026/25: Association of University Teachers vs University of Zimbabwe & 12 Others.
“The application sought to interdict the University’s 44th Graduation Ceremony scheduled for 15 August 2025.
“Following a case management meeting held at the High Court of Zimbabwe on 11 August 2025, the Applicant elected to withdraw its application.
“The withdrawal followed judicial scrutiny, which revealed substantive, procedural, and legal defects in the application.
“Consequently, the Court issued an order for the Applicant to bear the wasted costs incurred by the Respondents.
“The University of Zimbabwe assures its community that the graduation ceremony will proceed as planned.
“Graduands are encouraged to continue with their preparations, and all logistical arrangements remain firmly in place.
“To support final clearance processes, the Bursar’s Department, Library, and Faculty Offices will be open from 08:00 to 16:30 hours during the public holiday.”
