The Ministry of Women’s Affairs, Community, Small and Medium Enterprises Development has condemned the rape of a 13-year-old girl by a tout at the Rezende Parkade bus terminus in Harare recently.

In a statement, Minister Monica Mutsvangwa described the attack as a horrific act of violence against a vulnerable child and a stark reminder of the urgent need for robust measures to tackle violence against women and girls, particularly in public spaces. Said Mutsvangwa:

“This brazen act in public is utterly despicable and repulsive. We cannot remain passive while these predators prey on innocent young girls and women, violating their rights and possibly compromising their health.

“Such acts of violence are intolerable and must be met with the full force of the law.

“The Ministry is resolutely committed to ensuring that justice is served and that the perpetrator is held accountable for his vile actions.

“The trauma inflicted on the girl will linger, eroding her trust in adults and leaving deep emotional scars. Our hearts go out to her and her family during this difficult time.

“As Government, working with relevant stakeholders, we are committed to ensuring that the girl receives ongoing support to help her heal from such a traumatic experience.”

Mutsvangwa has urged the Harare City Council to strengthen law enforcement efforts to safeguard public spaces, especially bus termini, where vulnerable travelers are often at risk.

She called on the police to carry out a thorough investigation into this case, ensuring that the perpetrator is swiftly brought to justice and that all necessary legal actions are pursued.

The Minister also appealed to all stakeholders, including the public, to overcome the bystander effect by remaining vigilant and proactive in protecting one another.

She stressed that it is everyone’s responsibility to create and maintain a safe environment free from violence.

This man must be caught and should stay in jail for a very long time. We do not live with such kind of people amongst us.

There is also a 9 year old girl who was rapped by her mother’s brother late June in Bhohera and that guy is still on the run. Where do we get help for this girl?
